A few summers ago my cousin Hanneke and her husband Frits flew over from The Netherlands to spend some time with our family. They had the opportunity to visit my work and Frits decided he would like me to design a sculpture for Han’s birthday.
Hanneke was a huge part of my childhood and brought so much spirit and magic into our lives. I knew it would be an immense challenge to design something that would capture who she was. In the end it became a sculpture that explores women’s relationship to one another and to nature. It’s about strength, integrity and balance.
This is the first piece that I’ve had to ship overseas. My father and I carefully constructed three crates that could fit the whole piece. It was very exciting to send something back to the country of my birth.
