The story of Adam and Eve has always bothered me. It paints a bleak picture of Woman’s role in the formation of Humanity. Worse than that, the bleakness of this tale derives from its partialness, from the parts that seem left out of the story. The insights of writer Joseph Campbell and others who take a more radical approach to religion and myth, enable an alternate, fully-fleshed interpretation of this infamous story; one in which the interaction of Eve and the serpent is vested with new significance: Humanity’s consciousness, awareness and essential duality (spiritual-physical, sacred-profane) springs forth from this interaction. We became beautifully Human because of their relationship.
