Gentle Sea Goddess
This sculpture was inspired by the name Champlain gave Georgian Bay upon first discovering it. He called the Bay “La Mer Douce,” or “The Gentle Sea.” Since Fran has carved a series of Goddess figures she thought it more than fitting to carve The Gentle Sea Goddess for Collingwood, in remembrance of the Collingwood Shipyards. The figure’s face reflects her memories of “The Gentle Sea”, yet also reveals that she has seen many hardships and has felt the depth of life, death, and rebirth. The glass ball filled with water in the center of her womb symbolizes her innate relationship to the waters of Georgian Bay.
