This sculpture was done for a show called Raising Shakti, Restoring Balance. 50 glass pieces are inlaid down the middle of the sculpture. It is 6 ft high.

This project started with my clients concern over her redundant doorway – the result of extensive renovation. Since this was a dark space in the cabin, I came up with the idea of incorporating stain glass to let in the morning light and maintain a connection to the outside. These pictures give you a sense of the installation process…for some people very interesting.

I recently decided to explore the world of relief carving and Canadian Wildlife. Primarily I have focused on figurative work, so this has been a significant departure for me. This work has been primarily influenced by the art of Henna. These beings are adorned with design as a way of celebrating their sacredness and beauty.

When I was first presented with the commission to sculpt a bear and a bull in relationship to the stock market I wasn’t overly thrilled. There were so many typical approaches to this kind of piece. After weeks of just loosely carrying the concept in my head, I finally received this vision. The stock market is like a yo-yo, going up and down, controlled by seemingly mysterious and somewhat precarious forces. For those of you who are not financially savvy (like myself), the bull means that the market place is strong and the bear means the market place is struggling. I love how this piece turned out!

The Gentle Sea Goddess

The following series of pictures depict a project that I worked on with my mother. I was asked to be part of the Art Garden project in Collingwood. My mother designed a fall and winter garden and I designed the sculpture.

This sculpture was inspired by the name Champlain originally gave Georgian Bay. He called her the La Mer Douce, or the Gentle Sea. Inside of her womb lies a glass ball that holds the water of the Bay. This piece is dedicated to all those people who worked at the Collingwood Shipyards.

On May 9th Fran Bouwman, Melanie Earle, Robin Grebski, Carol Binns-Wood, Michelle McGauchie and Julia White had their opening reception at the Meaford Hall. This show was called Autopoiesis: Self Creation and explored the concept of Gaia. Here are some photographs of the show.

Fran Bouwman: Gaia: ‘Climate Change’ Series
Each of these carved mother earth figures reflects climate change and symbolically, consequential environmental and societal disasters. Unlike the Venus of Willendorf, whose voluptuous figure personifies abundance and fertility, these sculptures are contrary in nature. Depleted, emaciated and imbued with sorrow, they visually mirror the destructive nature of our excessive life-styles. Through figuratively personifying our environmental predicament, Fran Bouwman captures the fragile nature of Gaia and presents the urgency of achieving a sacred balance.

It was interesting to create functional art…to see how art and other objects can relate to one another in a dynamic way. The fawn was also challenging in it’s own way. I also wanted to create contract with this piece by making the stand cubist. The fawn is smooth and peaceful while the stand vibrates with energy and collision.
